Nexus One gets FCC Approval
By now you have likely heard all about the new rumored Google smartphone, code named "Nexus One". Even though it is still officially in the "rumor" phase of development, the FCC has nonetheless approved it. The phone that could possibly change the entire wireless telephone sales model will likely be available in the 1st quarter of 2010.

Delay in stimulus bad for Rural WiMAX
Wireless Week reports that the decision by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to delay the payout of the first broadband stimulus grants until December came is bad news for rural WiMAX providers. Since many rural providers were counting on the funds, some planned projects could be jeopardized.
According to the article,"Some of the companies applying for the funds are small, mom-and-pop shops with limited capital resources. Many of those companies have had to put their daily operations on hold to go through the complex application process, while larger companies have had to invest in legal resources and consultants for extra assistance. NYT reports: Verizon happy to ditch landlines
I suppose it was inevitable. Losing all that landline business can't leave you feeling good; what's a CEO to do? Ditch it, apparently. Ivan Seidenberg, the chief executive of Verizon Communications declared during a Goldman Sacks call that Verizon was simply no longer concerned with telephones that are connected with wires.
Also an interest from a rural perspective: Seidenberg announced that Verizon is selling off most of its operations in rural areas and is spending billions to wire most of the rest of its territory with its fiber optic network, or FiOS.

Great BBQ. IN CONNECTICUT!?!
It's possible. In fact, not surprising when you consider what barbecue really is. Many New Englanders and New Yorkers (myself included, before being duly initiated) will say "barbecue" when they really mean grilling hamburgers and dogs. It's not their fault really, they just don't know the nomenclature. New Englanders barbecue all the time, they just have other names for it. For example, a "clambake" is nothing less than barbacoa, the most ancient form of barbecue. New Englander's use shellfish rather than pork (plus seaweed and local hardwood), but otherwise it's very similar.
This brings me to original subject, great BBQ. While visiting relatives in my former home state, we went out of our way to visit one of the finest Connecticut shoreline "must visit" restaurants and hands-down best place for grilled lobster anywhere. "The Place" in Guilford, CT has been in business since 1971 and I've never seen it busier. It's extremely low-key. Everything is outdoors; the food prep, cooking and dining. Patrons sit on tree stumps around tables that were once wire spools (really). The menu is painted on a fence and the restaurant provided nothing but great food and pleasant atmosphere. This brings me to the second reason why The Place is so good: because you are provided next to nothing, you have every reason to bring everything, and that is exactly what folks do. I've seen everything from linen tablecloths, champagne and crystal to fancy side dishes, salads and sound systems. Some diners seem to go just to "out do" each other.
Before I digress further, let me tell you that there is nothing as delicious as lobster split and grilled over an oak fire. Corn is roasted in the husk and then drown in drawn butter (just try and stop yourself at two). My favorite is the clam special: fresh littlenecks with lemon and cocktail sauce grilled to perfection.
The Place, Gulford, CT 891 Boston Post Rd., Guilford, CT 203-453-9276

Sprint needs a hero
Sprint will be offering it's first Android device, the HTC Hero, on October 11. This should come as no surprise, as rumors of this phone have been circulating for, what seems like, months. Nevertheless, it's nice to see another carrier besides T-Mobile offer a phone on the Android platform.
According to Google, there will be no fewer than 28 Android devices that will drop in 2009 in the US. This seems like a high number, but I suspect it includes netbooks and tablets as well. Android is a highly versatile, open-source OS, so I would not be surprised if it were to become one of, it not the dominant phone OS in a few years.
Oh I know, I know...you are probably screaming about your precious iphone or Blackberry. "What about them!" you are thinking. Here's the diff - for all their claims to the contrary, they are largely proprietary OSs. They have also been created to sell hardware. None of this is true with Android. Not only is Android open-source and carrier and device agnostic, but it's also FREE! This third point helps keep the cost down and is very attractive to carriers. I should also mention that it's rock-solid and works well (and did I also mention that it's free?).
The only thing I can see on the horizon that would keep Android down would be Chrome, Google's browser that's about to become an OS as well. Unless they somehow merge these two, an internal war at Google over which OS should prevail will determine it's fate. Otherwise, you may want to start shopping for a hero!

Illinois, here I come!
Back on the road. This time, rural Fairview Illinois. On this excursion, I will be training folks to install satellites to receive Internet service. I also hope to visit nearby Peoria, where I attended Bradley University many eons ago. GO BRAVES! While readers of this blog know of my penchant for BBQ, I may make an exception and search for stuffed pizza, a known delicacy in this part of the world. Stay tuned...
I'm baaaak...
Back from a long hiatus - a family vacation! Now it's time to put my nose to the proverbial grindstone and keep my reader (s?) abreast of the happenings I encounter regarding rural telecommunication and technology (and of course, barbecue).
UPDATE: This photo was taken in Athens with an extended version of my family.

Sprint outsources management of it's networks
Sprint Nextel and Ericsson have announced a seven-year outsourcing deal. Under the agreement, Ericsson assumes responsibility for Sprint's three networks; CDMA, iDEN and wireline networks. In exchange, Sprint will pay Ericsson about $5B. Oh that, and lay off 8,000 employees.
Steve Elfman, president of network operations and wholesale commented, "No other U.S.-based carrier has followed through on the business-enhancing vision inherent in Network Advantage," (the name of this plan), "Our best-ever network performance will become even better by leveraging Ericsson's world-class leadership in network services, their proprietary tools, and the knowledge of more than 30,000 dedicated and highly-specialized service professionals to power Sprint's Now Network."
According to an article in Fierce Wireless, "'The North American telecom market has finally cracked. Sprint's $5 billion deal with Ericsson is a game changer that challenges ingrained perceptions of what is core and non-core to telecom operator's business activity,' said Yankee Group analyst Camille Mendler. 'Until today, North American telecom operators had proved unwilling to outsource network functions on such a large scale. That said, North American operators are well acquainted with outsourcing: Between 2002 and 2008, extensive outsourcing of functions involving business administration, IT and customer service has already occurred. But externalizing the operation of physical network plant has largely been excluded until now.'"
MY COMMENT: I'm not necessarily opposed to outsourcing, but I'm more and more concerned that as usual, America is neglecting it's skills. Sprint is trying to save it's hide and this may be the way for them to do it, but eventually, we become a nation of smart (or not so smart) business people that don't know anything about process or how to do anything. As one of my co-workers puts it, "There is a big difference between smart and skilled, either or both is good for different reasons". What do you think?
UPDATE: It turns out, the employees may not necessarily be laid off. A good portion of them will be working for Ericsson in Overland Park, Kansas, where Sprint is headquartered. Considering all of Sprint's problems of late, perhaps they're better off? I guess it really depends on the terms of their employment.

Network based DVR closer to reality
Today's non-ruling by the US Supreme Court clears the way for Cablevision to offer its Systems' Remote Storage-DVR service, or Network-based Personal Video Recorder (nPVR). By denying the request by several content companies to review the long-contested case challenging the service's use storage of copyrighted content, the U.S. Supreme Court in effect allwed Cablevision to go forward with it's plans.
According to FierceIPTV, "The legal victory not only frees Cablevision to launch its RS-DVR service, which a Sanford Bernstein report speculated could happen this summer, but also opens the door for other service providers, including telcos, who had been waiting for a legal resolution before considering their own network-based DVR services."

Verizon will pay State of Florida $1.5M
Following a settlement with the Attorney General of the State of Florida, Verizon Wireless will pay $1.5 million for third-party charges that appeared on consumers' bills. The customers were charged for ringtones, wallpapers and other mobile content that they were told would be free.
Rather than "free" as their marketing suggested, the content wound up costing customers up to $19.99 per month. The charges appeared on the subscriber's wireless bill as company's names, including OpenMarket, M-Qube and M-Blox.
"Consumers deserve to get their money back when a company misrepresents something as free that isn't," Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum said in a statement. "I commend Verizon Wireless for providing full restitution to their Florida customers and changing the business model to better protect consumers nationwide."
According to Fierce Wireless, late February saw AT&T Mobility agreeing to refund thousands of Florida consumers for the same problem. AT&T agreed to pay Florida $2.5 million and contribute $500,000 toward consumer education on safe Internet use. The carrier also agreed to the same kind of safeguards that Verizon will adopt. via FierceWireless

Q in Northern Virginia
Northern VA is not know for it's barbecue. Some people don't even think of this area as "The South" though they would be wrong. While many Northerners have infiltrated this place (myself included), they don't realize that Northern VA was a hotbed of civil war activity. When Grant fought Lee, he was fighting the Army of Northern Virginia, but I digress.
While there is some decent BBQ, much of it is provided by chains and the like. There are some darn good places, if you know where to look - which is why I was so pleased to find this place. Papa Dukes is really nothing more than a stand with some outdoor tables on the corner of two streets in Sterling. Yet, there is definitely something special about it - real Q for people who appreciate it. I say this because most would drive right by - Real barbecue lovers know that there is usually a direct inverse relationship between the way a BBQ joint looks and the quality of it's food. For Papa Dukes, the rule holds. If you don't believe me, look at the happy (sic) faces of my family enjoying having their photo taken.

DTV transition: The final days
Well, here we are, finally approaching June 12. What will be the outcome? Pandemonium? Mass protests? More likely, huge sales for cable and satellite companies. According to Multichannel News, Leichtman Research Group said that pay TV providers collectively may pick up as many as 200,000 to 400,000 net subscribers during the second quarter in buying actions related to the transition.
